DAY TELHAUG

Art Gallery Linn is proud to present the exhibition Mitt SØRLAND 2 / MY SOUTHERN NORWAY 2
Dag Telhaug is a landscape painter who lives right by the sea in Spangereid, a short distance from Lindesnes lighthouse at the southern tip of Norway. Telhaug has painted many new works for this exhibition that will fill the entire 1st floor of Art Gallery Linn. He continues to paint right up until the opening.

He draws his main inspiration from the sea, for his naval and maritime motifs, where he paints at Lindesnes and Lista. Telhaug depicts the coastal landscape of southern Norway, i.e. the marine landscape with varied sea bays, beaches, rivers, islets, reefs, and bird life. He conveys the mood, light, and nature in a harmonious way. The waves, the horizon, the weather, and the high sky above the surface of the water give the sea a changing face. Maritime painting is a genre depicting ships and seafaring – a genre that was particularly strong from the 1600s to the 1800s. As a young man, Telhaug wanted to work at sea, but his mother put her foot down. His passion for vessels, sailing ships and pleasure craft is evident in his maritime works. There are very few living maritime artists today. The boat is often an eye-catcher in Telhaug's paintings. A vessel brings people and goods to a destination or to uncharted waters, but the boat can also symbolize existential contexts such as the journey of life, the eternity of nature and the urge to travel.

This exhibition is a further development of the exhibition Mitt Sørland that Telhaug had at Buen Kulturhus in 2017. That's how he experienced the southernmost point of Norway back then. As the years have passed, new experiences and new marine motifs – not to mention sublime moods before/after recent extreme weather – it is his Sørland à 2024 that he today wants to show the viewer.

Telhaug likes to fish and be out in his old wooden boat. He also fills the boat with painting supplies and canvas and can often be seen out on the archipelago of Vår, which are some of Norway's southernmost islands, where he can stand outside to capture moments after changing weather, weather phenomena and shimmering motifs. If one lives by the sea under a high sky, the blue color often becomes dominant in the paintings.

Telhaug has been associated with Art Gallery Linn since its inception in 2021, where he has sold many works and received a lot of praise from visitors. In connection with this year's reality series Masters of Masters on the tv-channel NRK, Telhaug has had many requests afterwards because there were purchased paintings of him hanging in the villa where the sports stars lived.
